Pet-Friendly Switzerland: Sledding and Parks

Chewy and Patrick at Switzerland

Patrick and Chewy at Switzerland

Switzerland is almost too beautiful.  We drove through the Bernese Oberland region in the summer and it was lush, green, with arching mountain peaks; when we came back in the winter to spend a few days in the Bernese Oberland region, it was a white wonderland.  Unfortunately, we didn't have a lot of time in Switzerland but in the time we had, we found that it was an ideal place to travel with dogs.  Pets are allowed inside the rest stop dining areas and allowed in most restaurants, as well.

Apartment

We stayed in a lovely small apartment in Brienzwiler, halfway between the towns of Meiringen and Brienz.  We didn't take pictures at this apartment but we thought it was the perfect place to spend a few days with the dogs because we had a nice yard, were within a short drive to some nice parks, and our hosts made us feel very welcome and warm.

The Bernese Oberland Region

The Bernese Oberland region is a wonderful place to explore.  Full of gorgeous mountains, lakes, and trails, this region is known for its skiing, amazing sledding, and hiking trails in the summer.  It's also very pet-friendly.

The Hasliberg mountains are stunning snow-capped mountains with ski lifts going up and down the slopes.  Skiing, sledding, and hiking trails abound on this mountain.  Dogs are allowed on the ski lift to go up to the Hasliberg mountains.  We saw several people holding their dog's leash while sledding, creating their own personal sled dog!  More frequently, we saw dogs walking down the trails with their owners.  This is a fantastic low-key way to enjoy the Swiss mountains because you can have the ski lift do all the hard work going up and then enjoy the scenery walking down.

We didn't take the dogs up to Hasliberg because we didn't have time but instead let them enjoy the thick snow in one of the many beautiful parks around the town.  To be honest, though, I don't think there's a wrong way to enjoy time spent in Switzerland.  It's simply a wonderful country to travel in, with or without dogs.

Agreed. I love the Bernese Oberland. If anyone goes during the summer, my favorite spot was the tiny town of Lauterbrunnen. Stunning, and you can hike anywhere from there!

Roo, We didn't get to take the pups to a fondue restaurant but they were actually allowed at many of the local fondue stops so I wish we had! :)

Hi Akila, LOVE the blog. I was referred to it by an employee at Cunard. We were offered a last minute kennel spot on the QM2 for our four year old English Bulldog Berkley, departing New York this January 2013 going to Southampton and was told your blog would provide great insight!...and it sure was! We will be moving to Zurich, Switzerland for a two year rotation for my husband's accounting firm and obviously want(need!) to take Berkley. We are aware of all requirements and details about getting into the UK on the Pet Travel Scheme, but was hoping you would know more about eventually getting into Switzerland from there. I'm afraid the ferry you guys took from the UK to Spain is a little out of our way. Are you aware of anything closer or straight east to France that is pet friendly? Also, I've read in your blogs that Switzerland was pet friendly, I assume if I have all documentation and am compliant with all EU requirements, getting Berkley across borders shouldn't be a problem, but with Switzerland not being in the EU, I was hoping you could share your knowledge. Thanks!!!! -Sarah, AJ, and Berkley in Tampa, FL

Sarah, Thanks! Sorry for the long delay in responding to you. The easiest (and probably cheapest) way for you to get to Switzerland would be to rent a car and drive directly from England through France into Zurich. You could do the whole thing in one very long day or you could split it up into two days --- we did it in two days with about 6 hours on the first day (including the Eurotunnel) and 6 hours on the second day, though we drove about an hour and a half south of Zurich. Switzerland is super pet-friendly --- even the restaurants at rest areas allow leashed dogs inside which is very rare in Europe because most rest areas don't allow dogs --- and we saw lots of dogs out with their owners taking walks on the ski slopes. I think Berkeley will have a blast there! It was one of Chewy's and Abby's favorite countries in all of Europe.

It is one of the best places in the world for traveling, especially for those who want to enjoy the mesmerizing beauty of nature. However, not all places allow you to carry your dog with you, so if you are going on a trip and can not take your dog with you then you should find a dog boarding in Fenton MI.

I did not believe my eyes at first when I saw all these pictures. It is something that I have never even thought in my wildest of dreams and it really did catch me by surprise too. I hope that I will be able to go here soon this year. mesa az mobile home parks

Often pet owners can not go on trips because they are not allowed to take their pets with them. But here they will be able to have a fun time with their pets. Different people love different animals as pets, there are people who love to have fishes as pets in beautiful aquarium. Now most aquarium supplies are available online for sale including aquarium water chiller.

Those who love their pets they prefer taking their pets with them wherever they go. The dog owners would definitely love to come here and spend some quality time with their dogs. Most pet owners now prefer buying the pet supplies online. You can even find exclusive items like biOrb fish tanks online these days.

You have much batter time with your pet in the snow and I am just dreaming such season in my area as there is no snow fall this winter. I even write entertaining articles with college paper writing services but I think everything will be going in the diverse way.
